Cheap mobile phones could be illegal

THE CONSUMER protection law that took effect on July 1 could ban a common marketing practice used by telecom operators, the Sme daily reported on July 11.

The law bans making the purchase of one item conditional on buying another item. This could apply to telecom operators that tie the offer of subsidized mobile phones to 18 months or two years of post-paid services, the newspaper wrote.

However, operators are ignoring this possibility and continue to sell cheap mobile phones together with post-paid services. According to their interpretation of the law, it is enough if they offer subsidized mobile phones in a non-subsidized version that is not bound to post-paid services.
