US fighter planes come to Kuchyňa

F-16 PLANES from the US Air Force are at the military base in Kuchyňa, in Bratislava Region, for training exercises.

The planes from the Air Force's 31st Fighter Wing are using live machine-gun ammunition and bombs with dummy ammunition during the 10 days of exercises, which started on August 13.

The fighter aircraft flew in from their base in Italy for the exercises, which are being managed by military air traffic controllers, the TASR newswire reported.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a small, highly manoeuvrable, multi-purpose fighter jet, which is used in air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

The firing range exercises are taking place under a Memorandum of Understanding reached with the US Air Force in 1997 involving firing ranges and exercise grounds in Slovakia, pursuant to a government decision.

The second part of the exercises is scheduled for September 4 to 14.
