Banks show record profits in first half of year

The country's largest bank, Slovenská sporiteľňa (SLSP), made a record gross profit of 2.6 billion Slovak crowns ($52 million) in the first half of 2001, while the second largest bank, Všeobecná úverová banka (VÚB), grossed a record 2.8 billion crowns ($56 million) in the same period.

Both banks have been privatised in the last eight months; Slovenská sporiteľňa in December 2000 to Austrian Erste Bank, and VÚB to Italian bank IntesaBci in June 2001.
