Professional Army planned as early as 2006

Alan Stolberg, head of a US Army team which inspected the Slovak military from August 20 to 23, praised some Slovak units as almost NATO-ready, while Slovak Defence Minister Jozef Stank said conscription could end as early as 2006, the earliest date at which the Army could be made fully professional. Slovakia hopes to receive an invitation to join the Alliance in fall 2002.
