AmCham's Business After Hours

Children's oncological research concert

Agency Riva in co-operation with the League Against Cancer in Slovakia will hold an opera concert to benefit children's oncological research. Slovak National Theatre tenor soloist Gurgen Ovsepian will perform with Peter Dvorský, Martin Babjak, Jozef Kundlák and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ratislav Štúr. Concert begins at 19:00, October 29, in the Slovak Philharmonic Concert Hall at Reduta, Palackého 2. Tel: 6383 0724.


Austrian Embassy Literature Evening

The Austrian Embassy will hold a literature evening with professor and humorist Fritz Muliar, who will discuss holocaust memories with a hand-full of Jewish jokes characterised by their hidden wisdom. The show, 'Rabbi from a central Vienna Cafeteria', begins on October 23, at 18:00, in Mozart Hall, on Ventúrska 10.
Sunday, October 29, the Vienna choir 'A-Capella-Chor Donaufeld' will perform Jan Nepomuk Hummel's Mass Es Major, staring soloists Maria Brojer, Hanni Peschta, Josef Habringer and Michael Smeikal, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra led by Helmut Nissel. The concert takes place at Ve3ký Evanjelický Kostol (Big Evangelic Church) on Panenská street, at 18:00.


Goethe Institute Exhibitions

German artist Wilfried Saur presents his interpretations through various artistic forms of writer Franz Kafka's works at the Slovak National Museum on Vajanského nábrežie 2, open daily except Mon 9:00-17:00. Tel: 5934 9141. Exhibition runs till December 13.
Also, photographs of August Sander (1876-1964), one of the most significant German photographers of the 20th century, can be seen at the Slovenská národná galéria (Slovak National Gallery) in a presentation called 'People of the 20th Century'. Slovak National Gallery, Vodné kasárne, Rázusovo nábrežie 2. Tel: 5443 4587. The exhibition runs till November 30.


The French Institute's evenings

The French Institute will hold a literature evening on Wednesday, October 25 at 18:00, during which the topic 'Do Women Write Differently?' will be discussed at the French Institute's Gallery on Sedlárska 7.
The Institute is also holding an exhibition entitled "Harvest Time" featuring photographs of the grape harvest and wine production, where guests can sample the wine products featured in the photographs. Every Tuesday the exhibition presents a wine expert giving a lecture on different types of Slovak and French wines. This Tuesday, October 24, at 18:00, Ondrej Korpas and Paulette Monasse will discuss the varieties of wine distinct to each country, also at the French Institute's Gallery.
Moreover, the Institute invites you to a photo exhibition of Czech photographer Jioí Chmelao entitled 'Layers'. Chmelao, who lives in France, uses various layout techniques to create original expressions of the human face. Mirbachov Palace (second floor), at Františkánske námestie 11. Bratislava Zen Centre

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:30 to 20:00, the Slovak Zen Buddhism school Kuan Um in Bratislava invites beginners as well as long-term students to practice and learn about Zen Buddhism. Those interested can attend the meetings at 1udovíta Fullu 58/22. To get there, take bus #32 from the Main Train Station till the end of the line, get off and walk down Beniakova street to 1udovíta Fullu street. Or take trams #1, 5, 9, or 12 from the centre in the direction of Karlova Ves, get off at the Nad Lúekami bus stop and go up the hill to 1udovíta Fullu street. Baptist Worship

Dutch Embassy Museum

The newly opened Danubiana, a Museum of Modern Art on the banks of the Danube river, presently hosts an exhibition of the works of Dutch Painters from 1950 to 2000. Danubiana, part of the larger Meulen Steen art museum, sits south of the Bratislava city centre in the Eunovo area. To get there, drive across Nový most (new bridge) and south through Petržalka until you arrive in Eunovo. From there, follow the signs to Gabeíkovo dam. Or by bus from under the bridge, take the 91 line to Eunovo, where the dam is a short walk away. Exhibition runs till November 17.


Send your US absentee ballots

American expats living in Slovakia can send their absentee ballots to the US free of charge. DHL Slovakia will provide a free mailing service for voting Americans provided they submit their ballots to the nearest DHL office or to the Consular Section of the US embassy in Bratislava on Hviezdoslavovo námestie no later than October 30.
