The European Union commissioner for enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, said yesterday from Brussels that the recent terrorist attacks on the US were likely to speed EU expansion to the east as Europeans sought safety in greater numbers. Slovakia, which began entry negotiations with the EU last year, hopes to become a member in the first group of accepted countries, possibly by 2004.
