Fico wants referendum on SPP sale

Robert Fico, head of the non-parliamentary Smer party, said October 2 he intends to introduce to parliament a proposal that a referendum be held on the sale of a 49% stake in the state-owned gas utility SPP. A tender for the stake was called in late August, and the government hopes to have a winner declared by the end of this year.

The Democratic Left Party has recently called for a review of the privatisation, and Labour Minister Peter Magvaši has urged that only a 25% share in the company be sold.
