Slovaks gain economic strength

An index measuring the 'economic power' of Slovak citizens, compiled by the Slovak Ratings Agency from six different series of data including inflation and unemployment, rose to a value of 98.8 in August, its highest level since December 1999.

Despite the figures the standard of living among many Slovak cities and towns is below the average in the European Union, Bratislava being the only exception. A report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released earlier this year claimed that 11% of Slovaks lived below the poverty line.
