Saintly Slovaks

Slovakia has its first saints - both of them victims of the communist regime.

Bishop Peter Pavol Gojdič and Metod Trčka became the first Slovak saints after being beatified by the Pope in Rome.

Speaking in Slovak the Pope said: "Both men became martyrs in the heroic service of the Greek Orthodox Church in Slovakia. Peter remembers them and calls them Kings of the Slavs."

The beatifications were attended by Slovak President Rudolf Schuster and an estimated 5,000 Slovaks.
