HZDS dominates runup to ballot

Candidates fielded by the opposition HZDS party of Vladimír Mečiar led voter support polls in six of eight Slovak regions that were to see elections to regional parliaments December 1 as The Slovak Spectator went to print.

Political analysts said they were troubled by poll results showing that less than 50% of registered voters intended to turn out for the ballot, meant to launch Slovakia's reform of public administration and bring government closer to the people.
