Steel firm denies 'dumping'el

Steel maker US Steel Košice has rejected accusations from Eurofer, a European steel market watchdog, that the firm is selling hot rolled steel to EU markets at below production costs. US Steel Košice President John Goodish said the EU is itself trying to protect its recession-bound markets.

A worldwide recession on steel markets has also hit the company. As many as 82% of workers will be sent on forced leave over the holiday period. US Steel Košice has said it will temporarily close some of its production lines at Christmas because of the recession, sending all but 2,700 of its 15,000 employees home for a two-week break.

After meeting with representatives from US Steel Košice November 26 Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda publicly dismissed what he called "rumours" that the firm was considering mass layoffs.
