Monarchs notch playoff berth

The Bratislava Monarchs took the fourth and final playoff slot in the Czech League of American Football on September 5 by beating the Ostrava Steelers 16 to 6 in Bratislava. The game, a closely contested war of attrition, had been the decider for the playoff berth.
The victory gave the Monarchs a final season record of five wins and five losses, the same as Ostrava. The final playoff slot was awarded to Bratislava on the basis of its having won the head to head tie-breaking match.
Bratislava now faces the unenviable chore of traveling to Prague on September 18 to play the Prague Panthers in the league semi-finals. The Panthers are undefeated in ten games this year and have outscored opponents by a combined total of 403 to 14. The other semi-final match pits the 8 and 2 Prague Lions against the 8 and 2 Brno Alligators.

Slovak Hockey Extraliga underway

The 1999/2000 season of the Slovak Ice Hockey West Extraliga began September 8. The league has been shaved to eight teams this year, and after 56 matches, the top four teams will advance to the playoffs while the last place team will be relegated to the second division.
After the first four rounds of the season, Slovan Bratislava is atop the league standings with a perfect record after outscoring opponents 24 to 6. Košice, last year's Extraliga champions, find themselves winless and in last-place after allowing an embarrassing 27 goals through their first four games.

Angels and Fighting Flies in SBF finals

The 1999 five-game championship series of the Slovak Baseball Federation (SBF) will pit the Trnava Angels against the Bratislava Fighting Flies.
After finishing first in the final league standings with a 13 and 3 record, the Angels earned a berth in the championship series by defeating ŠK Felo of Bratislava in two games of a best-of three series, 7 - 3 and 9 - 5. The Fighting Flies (11 wins, 5 losses) will play in the series championship for the first time in their history after they upset the six-time defending SBF champion Bratislava Spiders in three games, 11 - 5, 10 - 11, and 9 - 5.
Games 1 and 2 will be played September 25 and 26 with games 3 and 4 slated for the following weekend of October 2 and 3. If necessary, the decisive game 5 will be played on Saturday, October 9.
All games will be played at Bratislava's Kalinčiaková field (at the corner of Bajkalská and Trnavská streets, behind Slovan football stadium).
