Schmögnerová, Weiss quit SDĽ

BRIGITA Schmögnerová and Peter Weiss announced on January 31 they were leaving a party they helped to found and build, the former communist SDĽ.

The pair said that changes in the party since Pavol Koncoš became chairman last year, including a return to hard-line policy and a rapprochement with Vladimír Mečiar's HZDS, had convinced them to leave.

Schmögnerová, former Finance Minister, and Weiss, former SDĽ chairman, have not said whether they will form a new party of their own.
