New EC Ambassador to Slovakia takes seat in Bratislava

The new European Commission (EC) Ambassador to Slovakia, Walter Rochel, presented his credentials to Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda in Bratislava on February 9.

During the presentation, Rochel said that he is looking forward to helping Slovakia prepare for membership in the European Union.

Before joining the EC in November 1998, Rochel was Minister Plenipotentiary in the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with responsibility for EC structural policy, agriculture and the progression of EC directives on national law. He also held diplomatic posts abroad at the Austrian Embassies in Paris and Riyadh.

He told Dzurinda he has already started to learn Slovak.
