Kids dabbling with drugs

OFFICIALS at the Centre for Treatment of Drug Addicts in Bratislava say that while the average age of drug addicts is rising, kids as young as eight are now experimenting with drugs.

Speaking after a recent police raid on a flat in the capital revealed a heroin production base, the manager of the Centre, Ľubomír Okruhlica, said the youngsters' experiments were soon leading to addiction.

"Most often they try cannabis. There is a great risk of moving from experimentation to dependence," he said.

Slovakia experienced an explosion in drug addiction following the end of communism in 1989.
