US Steel Košice plays waiting game

US STEEL Košice (USSK) President John Goodish says it's too early to predict what effect an American decision to impose an 8 to 30 per cent import duty on steel imports will have on the firm's production, adding it's far more important how the European Union reacts. USSK, which made a profit of $123 million last year, exported only 10,000 tons of the 3.4 million tons of steel it produced in 2001 to the US, but sent fully 30 per cent of production to EU member states. Slovakia is not an EU member and thus may suffer if the Union imposes duties. USSK, moreover, has faced an anti-dumping action by the Eurofer association since last year.
