AltaVista
(www.altavista.com)
ALTAVISTA is a powerful keyword search engine. It allows you to search on phrases of more than one word if you put the phrase into quotations marks, eg. "health care facilities" or "Bill Gates." Alta Vista has lots of search-refining options. It was considered big and fast and until Google came along, and used to be the favourite of many dedicated web-surfers. Like the other search engines, it is also branching out into directory-like areas, such as health, news and travel.

Excite
(www.excite.com)
EXCITE is a concept-based search engine. This means it will try to figure out what you mean, instead of just searching on exactly what you say. This gives Excite a great deal of flexibility. Like Infoseek and Yahoo, Excite is now into Web publishing. The Excite site includes an extensive Web directory.

Excite does not tell you how many hits you have found.

Lycos
(www.lycos.com)
LYCOS is big, thorough and comprehensive. Like Excite and many of the original search engines, Lycos has become more of a directory and portal site. Lycos has now joined forces with Hotbot.

Google
(www.google.com)
GOOGLE is one of the newer search engines, and has rapidly become a favourite of searchers who do not want to wade through directories, news, weather and stock quotes just to do a web search. It is thorough and fast. Google's technology considers pages that are frequently linked to from other sites to be more important than pages that have few links from other sites. In other words, if a lot of webmasters consider a site valuable enough to link to it, Google considers that a good reason to justify a high ranking for that site.

You can also search in Slovak with Google's language settings.

Fast
(www.alltheweb.com)
FAST is another relatively new search engine that claims to be faster and more efficient than other search engines. This claim was typically made by everybody in the second half of the 1990's, but FAST seems to be making good on the claim. It boasts the largest catalogue and the most rapid look-up times of any search engine on the Web.

Its advance search options allow for really narrow searches and it is possible to search in a specific language, including Slovak.
