Fixed-line monopoly Slovak Telecom in 2001 made a pre-tax profit of Sk4.5 billion, a Sk3.7 billion rise on the year before. The firm laid off 1,450 of 12,068 employees, with compensation packages ranging from 7 to 17 months’ wages.
