BANSKÁ BYSTRICA
Two try to bank fake bucks

A divorced couple - a 47-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman - tried to deposit $10,000 in fake one-hundred US dollar banknotes in Lučenec on November 3. The counter clerk at the Prvá komunálna banka identified the counterfeit notes by the fact that they did not have watermarks. The bank-notes were sent to the Slovak National Bank's testing centre, where they will be examined by experts. The two people, who were interviewed by the police, claimed they withdrew the money from another account they held at Všeobecná úverová banka (VÚB) in Detva. The case is being investigated by the Banská Bystrica police department.

REVÚCA
Police find illegal weapons in car

On October 31, a police patrol found two rifles in the car of 39-year-old J. S. from Revúca during a routine spot-check. The make of the 8-mm rifle and the smaller rifle could not be determined, and both were fitted with telescopic lenses. The driver of the car was also carrying eight cartridges in the magazine of each rifle. He claimed to the police officers that he had come by the weapons as part of the legacy of his now dead uncle. Marta Mandáková, the Banská Bystrica police headquarters spokesperson, reported that neither of the weapons had been legally registered.

KOŠICE
Costly and uncertain bed games

Expecting to bed two women that he had met at a night-club, a Prague-based business man invited them back to his room at the Academia Hotel in Košice. But when the suave gentleman offered drinks to the ladies, he failed to observe one of them putting a strong sedative in his glass. The unfortunate man fell asleep soon after drinking his nightcap. Upon waking, he discovered that the ungrateful ladies had absconded with his Eurocard. He called the local bank immediately to block his account, but was told that 58,000 Sk ($1,600) had already been withdrawn. The case is being investigated by the Košice regional police department.

PIEŠŤANY
Juvenile delinquents detained

Three juvenile criminals from Púchov were detained by police in the spa city of Piešťany on October 29. The teenagers had committed up to ten robberies around the city. On October 27, the boys came to the local toy-shop, and holding gas pistols in their hands, robbed the shop assistant. They forced her to hand over personal jewellery worth 8,000 Sk ($250) and then zapped her with an electric shock paralyser, taped her mouth and arms and stole another 7,500 Sk ($215) from the cash register. According to police, the teenagers were frequent visitors to sex shops and erotic salons, where they paid for services with money obtained from robberies. 13 year-old Rudolf G. and his 16-year-old brother Jordan have already had some experience with the criminal justice system, but only the older brother and his 15 year-old partner have been remanded in jail while the case is investigated. 13 year-old Rudolf had to be released because of his youth: according to Slovak law, children under 15 cannot be prosecuted for criminal acts, but their parents may be found responsible instead.

Píšem or pišám?

"Do ľava," (to the left) I yelled, "Nie, do prava" (no, to the right), I gasped. "Dolšie," I screamed. "Nie, nie, horšie..." My Slovak girlfriend collapsed in laughter. Was it something I said?
