Budget deficit soars to 8.9 billion Sk

The Slovak 1998 state budget showed a fiscal deficit of 8.937 billion crowns ($257.1 million) at the end of July, up from 3.868 billion crowns at the end of June, the Finance Ministry said on August 4. The Ministry changed the way it states the budget balance at the beginning of 1998 to exclude payments of the state debt principal, and said it was not immediately able to give comparatives for the first seven months of 1997 due to the change in methodology.
