THE FIRST annual Aurel Awards for music resulted in several surprises for the Slovak music scene in 2001. The lead vocalist of the Peha band, 20-year-old Katka Knechtová, caused a major sensation by beating such perennial stars as Jana Kirschnerová and Marika Gombitová in the female vocalist category.

The event, organised by the International Phonograph Industry Federation, took place March 8.

The list of awarded musicians included:

Best male vocalist: Richard Müller
Best band: Free Faces
Best instrumentalist: Juraj Burian
Discovery of the year: Seven Days To Winter
Song of the year: Ivan Tásler/Richar Müller - Nahý II (Naked II)
Album of the year: 01 - Richar Müller
Lifelong contribution to music: Jaro Filip.
