Jozef Kalman, a member of parliament for the opposition HZDS party, has given up both his seat in the legislature and his party membership to launch a new left-wing party. Kalman denied the move had been pre-arranged with HZDS leader Vladimír Mečiar to give the HZDS potentially another party after elections with which to form a government.
