Slovakia's trade deficit grew to 27.91 billion Sk at the end of April, after ballooning a record 12 billion Sk during the month. The figure exceeds the 21.5 billion Sk deficit recorded in the fist four months of 1996. Total trade turnover was 218.45 billion Sk for the first four months of this year, up 18.3 percent from 1996. During 1996, the government declared that the deficit resulted from imports of Russian armaments (as part of Russia's payment of old debts) and massive car imports, adding that the figure would not occur again.
