Phone lines up by 36 percent

The total number of phone lines as of March 31, 1996 was 1,649,000, 35.9 percent higher when compared with the same period last year. Of this number, 1,156,000 were single phone lines. There were 15,600 operating mobile phones at the end of the first quarter of 1996 (a 101.4 percent increase) and 47,900 fax machines (45.6 percent growth). The number of unprocessed phone line applications was reduced by 19.1 percent to 164,000.
