The leu's value has fallen by about 50 percent against hard currencies in the past month, Romanian media reported. A dollar now fetches 3,300 leu, compared to 2,000 in mid-October. The abrupt depreciation is expected to produce a chain reaction in prices which could lead to uncontrollable inflation by Christmas, a leading economist at Romania's national bank said.
