Cafés

Andy's- A small gallery in which budding Slovak artists' work is displayed. A pleasant stroll from the hrad or from Staré mesto - and a nice stop for a glass of wine- or two. $. Beblavého ulica. hrs: 10:00-23:00, M - Su.

Atlantis- This cukrareň with good, inexpensive ice cream and scrumptious cheese cake is very popular with students...often too popular with lines winding out the door. $$. Štúrova 13. hrs: 10:00-20:00.

Café Gremium- A new interior layout has improved the ambiance here. The art gallery has ebbed so that it now surrounds an expanded café. Look for the pool tables with a view upstairs. $. Gorkého ul 11. tel: 321-151. hrs: 8:30-23:00 M-Sa.

Columbia Café- Artists, journalists, and businesspeople congregate here for the low prices and lively atmosphere. Feel free to bring your own tapes to listen to. $. Zámočnícka 7. tel: 335-007. hrs: 10:00-22:00.

Espresso Clip- This Petržalka joint seats 50 and is looking to introduce a host of new specialties. $. Strečniaska 11. tel: 829-908. hrs: 10:00-22:00.

Espresso Fontana- Virtually surrounded by the Technical University buildings, Fontana caters to the student with limited time and money. Refreshments such as ice cream and pancakes are available. So are mixed drinks. $. Nám. Slobody 1. tel: 495-653. hrs: 9:00-23:00.

Food Market- Westerners may feel at home with the variety of cuisine and speed of service here. Choose from the salad stand, pastry stand, burger stand, and Chinese food stand, among others. The common denominator is stand, for that is how most people must eat. $. Gorkého 1. hrs: 9:30-19:00 M-Sa.

London Café- Located at the British Council, this is a favorite spot for English-speakers to grab a leisurely sip or bite. The quiche is great for lunch, as is the tunafish sandwich. Good soups and salads as well. A serene place to catch up on world news as written in English. $. Panská 17.hrs: 9:00-21:00.

Pepsi Bistro- This converted dry cleaners used to be one in a line of old buildings, but now stands alone as a neon beacon illuminating the end of Obchodná ul. The baguette sandwiches and salads are good, but not always available. $. Kollárovo nám. hrs: 10:00-22:00.

U 4 Anjelov- Small, modern and classy, this spot set in a corner nook is super for pastries during daylight and drinks after sunset. Its few seats offer intimacy, but demand may exceed supply. Feel free to come in for happy hour or pre- or post-theater. $. Laurinská ul. hrs: 10:00-21:00 M-F.

Vináreň 44- A typical Slovak vináreň, (wine cellar), - but watch out if you get seated down in the cellar - it can get mighty chilly on a cold night. The first room on the right is dim and cozy with beautiful wood-paneled walls. $$$. Vysoká 44, tel: 361-167.
