Rock Café Bratislava- This modern bar next to the ice rink has a slick-but-comfortable feel. That may be a result of the occaisonal performances by a Frank Sinatra impersonator. Budúcnosť- Nothing futuristic about this pub. The name comes from a socialist-style department store. Quite close to Dom Kultúry Ružinov. Dark wood bar, Budvar on tap. Pool tables are a big plus. $. Ostrednová 1. % 293-663. < 11:00-1:00.

Bufet na Myte- During hot summer days, this is a prime place to share a table with the locals. The all-wooden open-air watering hole attracts some of Bratislava's finest drunks. KGB- Descend into this dark, narrow cellar and find one of the city's new hot spots. A young Slovak crowd jams the place on weekends. A rare combo of Charlie's and U Club clientele. Thirsty Monk is on tap. $$ Obchodná ul. < 10:00-24.00.

Monaco Club- Two flights below ground in the Hotel Danube, this is a hangout for Slovaks dressed for success. The big, beautiful pool table, large-screen TV and open dance floor make this place extremely comfortable. Pod Machnáčom- Where else can you get dark Měšťan from Prague on tap? This is the place for beer. It is usually packed with students. When the loud music plays non-stop, there's no hope of hearing what your partner is saying. Sometimes spontaneous dance parties erupt among the tables. The stone-faced waiter might get mad if you ask for more bread with your cheap bean soup. You might find yourself looking for your salad on your plate. $$. CC: no. Eng. menu: no. Res: yes. Queens Pub- Small pub with good music - dancing on the tables is both permitted and encouraged. This may be the only bar in Bratislava serving Guinness and other imported beers on tap. The only drawback is the location. Prepare to take night bus or cab. $$$. Nobelova 32. % 369-007.

Rolo Cafe- At night drink Pilsner Urquel downstairs with a cliquey crowd or retreat to the upstairs for a variety of coffees while overlooking Stefanikova ul.. During the day the cafe becomes a kind of suave European coffee bar. $$ Stefaniková 27. < 10:00-24.00.

Satellite- This raucous joint in Lamač serves a rough and ready crowd that is highly excitable and in the mood to chase the opposite sex. Dancing is a strong component to this mating game, which means that it's not too hard to grab one of the two pool tables, even on the weekends. Three kinds of drafts for under 22 Sk keeps the crowd happy and loose. These are people that are looking for a good time, but watch out if you start cutting the rug with someone else's date. $. Scene Club- Eclectic music, ditto the atmosphere in this smoke-filled basement pub. The one pool table is always full. Bottles only, no draft beer but the food is great. Waiters from "Sprockets." $$. Michalská ul. < 10:00-24:00 M-Su.

Senator- The descent from street-level is surprisingly long and the light emitted from the room at the end of the stairwell is pink. Very, very pink. And sparkly. A mellow place to sip away the evening. The food is actually quite good. $$. Župné nám. < 10:00-23:00.

Slamená Búda- Get off trolley #213 at the top of Kamzík,walk down a bit to the hidden entrance to the small inner room or continue to the large outdoor seating area with Tatran beer billboards. You can get it here on tap and in bottles, light and dark. It goes well with vyprážený syr or gulás. You shouldn't leave without trying at least one of the soups - the spicey lentil is delicious. $. U Čierneho Orla- Stein on tap, but may have to wait until the keg literally rolls into the cellar. Your basic good and greasy Slovak food (which means, of course, pork dishes). Clear the cholesterol by chugging a brew. $$. Obchodná 17. % 335-358. < 10:00-22:30.

U Club- Nuclear shelter turned night club under the Hrad and right next to the tunnel where the trams run. Plays deafening music. Open until 4:00 a.m. for dancing. U Eda- The stuffed animal heads on the wall are sure to be a big hit. Easy to pick out this two-room eating and drinking establishment from the street - just look for the frosty beer mug sign hanging above the door. $$. Biela ul. 5. % 371-822. < 10:00-22:00 M-Su.
