Café Roland to close
There will be little to celebrate on New Year's Eve at Café Roland. The popular café on Hlavné námestie in Bratislava's Old Town has been told by Československá Obchodna Banka that it has until December 31 to move out. With the bank taking over the space, Roland becomes the second eatery on the square to fall into a bank's hands, following the old Zelený Dom (Green House) restaurant, which Slovenská Sporiteľna renovated for its own purposes earlier this year. "It's a great shame for Bratislava," said Marta Herczeg, Roland's owner. "It's a great sin."
Stival opens where McDonald's didn't
Stival, the Czech shoe company, recently opened a shop in Bratislava on Obchodná ulica - in the same space where McDonald's had contract troubles earlier in the year. Philippe Echenard, McDonald's project manager in Slovakia, said that the American fast food company had signed a contract on the prime property directly behind Hotel Forum. But the property owners later asked for more money, so McDonald's scrapped the deal and, as Echenard said, the situation "is in the hands of our lawyers."
Arthur Andersen moving to Panská
Arthur Andersen will move their Bratislava offices out of the Hotel Danube and into Panská 14 in the Old Town in February or March of 1996, according to Martina Molt of ACI, which acted as the letting agent in the deal. The international consulting firm has signed a five-year lease on 450 square meters.
Bank Austria opens Slovak headquarters
Bank Austria opened their new Slovak headquarters at Mostová 6 across from Reduta in Bratislava. The bank, which bought 1,800 square meters from Realitná Spoločnosť VÚB in December 1994, has had a license to operate in Slovakia since January 1 of this year. One unique feature of the bank is its street-side currency exchange machine - reportedly Slovakia's first.
Bratislava seeking $64 million
Bratislava is seeking to raise $64 million via bonds in order to pay for public lighting, the reconstruction of a couple of buildings, and the construction of Zámocká ulica under the Bratislava Castle. The bonds, which the city plans to issue on either the Tokyo or London stock markets, will have an annual interest rate of 6 percent. The city does not plan to use the money to invest in transportation or maintenance services.
Chicken Chips may open early in 1996
Kastor s.r.o., formerly a part-owner of the Luxor building at Štúrova 1 and 3, recently bought the remaining share of the building from the Staré Mesto district office for 31.8 million Sk. Ján Badžgoň, Kastor's chairman of the board, said a fast-food restaurant called Chicken Chips will open on the building's ground floor as early as the beginning of January and that a café could go either on the first floor or the roof. Badžgoň conceded that a lack of parking remains a problem, which is why a few lawyers have moved their offices out of the building. Badžgoň said total reconstruction could be finished by April 1996.
Ryden sells Košice warehouse
Ryden, the joint exclusive agent for K-Mart's Czech and Slovak property portfolio, sold a 4,000 square meter storage complex for K-Mart in Košice.
Surveying: Karlova Ves
Although features such as the three-year-old Lafranconi Bridge give Karlova Ves a spanking new appearance compared to the city's other districts, its history dates back to the thirteenth century. Today, the district is composed of three main residential areas that are distinguished by their age brackets. The old village of Karlova Ves is home to many of the district's senior citizens, while Dlhé Diely, a housing development whose completion has been stalled by funding problems, houses many young couples and families. High-rise paneláks dominate the housing stock and very few residents own their own homes. As a heavily residential district, most people must commute to the city's other districts to work Institutions: St. Michal's church, Botanical gardens, city zoo, the natural sciences and mathematics and physics faculties of Comenius University, the Technical University's electrotechnical faculty.
