Cafés

Andy's- A small gallery in which budding Slovak artists' work is displayed. A pleasant stroll from the hrad or from Staré mesto - and a nice stop for a glass of wine- or two. $. Beblavého ulica. <10:00-23:00, M - Su.

Atlantis- This cukraren with good, inexpensive ice cream and scrumptuous cheese cake is very popular with students...often too popular with lines winding out the door. The hours were lengthened by an hour this summer and thank goodness, considering how hard it is to get a simple dessert in the center of town after 8 p.m. $$. Štúrova 13. < 10:00-21:00.

Café Gremium- Glass front windows, tile floor and tiny tables give this joint all the warmth of a bank lobby. The art gallery in the rear provides an optical illusion during the day that turns into a kind of inanimate zoo when the gate is down. Occasional lectures liven it up once in a while. $. Gorkého ul 11. % 321-151. < 8:30-23:00 M-Sa. @

Café Maximilián- A new café conveniently next door to café Roland. Clean and modern with a Viennese flair. Nice decor - and most exciting, when seated upstairs order your drinks by telephone. $$. Hlavné námestie, %335-474. <10:00-22:00, M-Su. @

Café Mozart- It takes a little effort to find, but the luscious fruit salad makes it all worth it, considering such treats are especially rare in this city. $. Mozartova ul. < 10:00-22:00.

Café Propeller- Sluggish doesnot begin to describe the staff here. This is a tre shame, because the location, right on the Danube, cannot be beat. But when you are forced to hunt down service not once, not twice, but three times, it makes you want to hunt for a new place. $$. Vajanského nábr. % 334-596. < 10:00-20:00 M-Su. @

Café Roland- An art-nouveau style café located centrally on the Main Square. Excellent coffee and a full bar as well as desserts and light fare served by a pleasant and efficient staff. A good meeting place during the day or evening. $$. CC: yes. Hlavné námestie 4, %316-002. <10:00-22:00 M-F, 12:00-22:00 Sa-Su. @

Café Solid- The outdoor patio is the saving grace for this utherwise unalluring spot tucked away on a side street in the center of the city. Amazingly, half-liter Pilsners sell for 25 Sk here, while a tiny pub around the corner sells half liter drafts for 12 Sk. $$. Tobrucká ul. < 10:00-11:00 M-Sa. @

Café Tatra- The chairs look plush; but they aren't. The place tries to look fancy and a touch modern with black sprayed eveerywhere; but it isn't. Yet it's the joint for the chic and the elite. Blush, coated red lipstick and plumes of smoke wafting from thin, long cigarettes complete the tableau. Go there, order some coffee and hang after the picture show. It's the cool thing to do. Nám. 1 maja. < 10:00-22:00.

Food Market- A plethora of fast food. Hamburgers aren't what a Westerner expects. $. Gorkého 1. < 9:30-19:00 M-Sa.

Hlavná stanica- Okay, so it's the café right at the train station. But think about this: Is there a better people-watching place in the city? Sit out on the terrace for the best view, open only during the warm days. Coffee quality is what you'd might expect from a place that caters to the masses, but the daily offering of salads are fresh and satisfying. $. Hlavná stanica. < ----. @

London Cafe- Located at the British Council, this is a favorite spot for English-speakers to grab a leisurely sip or bite. The quiche is great at lunch, but pozor around supper. A serene place to catch up on world news as written in English. $. Panská 17. <9:00-21:00.@

Perla- The cafe is OK, but the beer hall in the back left is actually cleaner and smoke-free, with Budvar on tap. Sit at the wooden tables and order mostly Slovak fare from the restaurant menu. The wait staff is pleasant and efficient. $. Mariánska 11. % 364-493. < 8:00-23:00.

Sibyla- Good coffee is often hard to find late at night, so here is a tip. At the top of Nám. SNP, walk down a flight to this café. The decor, featuring fake roses and cushioned semi-circular benches is of questionable character, but get beyond the love connection aura and sample the gourmet coffees. $$. Hurbanovo nám. 9. % 332-852. < 10:00-24:00. @

Slamienka- Welcome to the best-smelling place in town. This afternoon and evening gathering spot for the avant garde and intellectuals specializes in Oriental and herbal teas. Tea room, complete with new age philosophy books. Some cold plates, desserts and vegetarian dishes offered. The "India Summer" and Marco Polo Fruit tea are well worth their 30 Sk price tag. $$. Obchodná 26. <9:00 to 22:00.
