Bars

Bufet na Myte- During hot spring days, this is a prime place to share a table with the locals. The all-wooden open-air watering hole attracts some of Bratislava's finest drunks. Watch them stagger along their migratory patterns across the square. Take care not to follow their lead. $. Račianske myto. < 10:00-22:00 M-Sa. @

Hollywood Billiards - Watch youth hockey live, while quaffing cheap beer or playing pool on over a dozen tables. Open until 4:00 a.m. - plan to spend a few hours. $. Ružinovská ul. in the new Zimny Štadion. <10:00-24:00 M-Su.

KGB- Descend into this dark, narrow cellar and find one of the city's new hot spots. A young Slovak crowd jams the place on weekends. A rare combo of Charlie's and U Club clientele. Thirsty Monk is on tap. $$ Obchodná ul. < 10:00-24.00.

Koník- Western style pub with memorabilia covering the walls. A comfortable place to hang out. Come ready to drink, there is no food served. $$. Mlynske nivy 8, 367-511. < 10:00-22:00 M-Su. @

Mamutko- If you want to experience the traditional Slovak lifestyle, the hours here are for you. This Central European O.K. Corral has few seats and the logs you lean against have little padding for the fanny. Soup and sausage are available to fill your stomach. $. Nám. Slobody 1. < 6:30-21:30 M-Sa.

Monaco Club- Two flights below ground in the Hotel Danube, this is a hangout for Slovaks dressed for success. The big, beautiful pool table, large-screen TV and open dance floor make this place extremely comfortable. Be ready to put your money where your mouth is: A small beer is 56 Sk and mixed drinks can be three or four times that. $$$. Rybné nám. 1, % 340-000. < 20:00-4:00 M-Su.

Pod Machnáčom- Where else can you get dark Méšťan directly from Prague on tap? This is the right place for beer. It is usually packed with students during the school year. When the radio plays loud music non-stop, there's no hope of hearing what your partner is saying. Somtimes spontaneous dance parties erupt among the tables. The stone-faced waiter might get mad at you if you ask for more bread with your cheap bean soup. You might find yourself looking for your salad on your plate. Don't bother- better to order more beer. $$. CC: no. Eng. menu: no. Res: yes. Nábr. arm. gen. Ľ. Svobodu 42. % 314-580. < 12:00-1:00 M-Su.

Pod Tunelom- Take a swig from the pulpit of the "Thirsty Monk" (under 13 Sk for a half liter draft) before catching the train from Hlavna Stanica. You'll be prepared for the ride because trains rumble over this small bar. $. Žabotova ul. < 10:00-22:00 M-Sa.

Queens Pub- Small pub with good music - dancing on the tables is both permitted and encouraged. This may be the only bar in Bratislava serving Guinness and other imported beers on tap. The only drawback is the location. Prepare to take night bus or cab. $$$. Nobelová 32 , 369-007.

Rock Café Bratislava- This modern bar next to the ice rink has a slick-but-comfortable feel. That may be a result of the occaisonal performances by a Frank Sinatra impersonator. Sit at tall stools to partake of the large range of drinks and small menu of grill meats; d.j. and pool table too. $$. Trnavská Cesta. % 360-312. < 12:00-4:00.

Rolo Cafe- At night drink Pilsner Urquel downstairs with a cliquey crowd or retreat to the upstairs for a variety of coffees while overlooking Stefanikova ul.. During the day the cafe becomes a kind of suave European coffee bar. $$ Stefaniková 27. < 10:00-24.00. @

Scene Club- Eclectic music, ditto the atmosphere in this smoke-filled basement pub. The one pool table is always full. Bottles only, no draft beer but the food is great. Waiters from "Sprockets." $$. Michalská ul. < 10:00-24:00 M-Su.

Slamená Búda- Get off trolley #213 at the top of Kamzík,walk down a bit to the hidden entrance to the small inner room or continue to the large outdoor seating area with Tatran beer billboards. You can get it here on tap and in bottles, light and dark. It goes well with vyprážený syr or gulás. You shouldn't leave without trying at least one of the soups - the spicey lentil is delicious. $. CC: no. Eng. menu: no. Res: no. Cesta na Kamzík 39. % 371-608. < 9:00-23:00 Tu-Su, 12:00-23:00 M. @

Smíchovsky Dvor- Well-priced and tasty Slovak specialties. Staropramen flows from the tap and starting April 1, the streetside beer garden will begin its spring season. $. Mariánska 6. % 324-163. < 10:00-22.00 @

U Čierneho Orla- Stein on tap, but may have to wait until the keg literally rolls into the cellar. Your basic good and greasy Slovak food (which means, of course, pork dishes). Clear the cholesterol by chugging a brew. $$. Obchodná 17. % 335-358. < 10:00-22:30.

U Club- Nuclear shelter turned night club under the Hrad and right next to the tunnel where the trams run. Plays deafening music. Open until 4:00 a.m. for dancing. Good last stop after a night on the town in Bratislava. 20 Sk cover charge. $. Nabr. gen. Ludvika Svobodu between the SNP bridge and Žižkova ul. < 10:00-2:00 M-Sa.

U Eda- The stuffed animal heads on the wall are sure to be a big hit. Easy to pick out this two-room eating and drinking establishment from the street - just look for the frosty beer mug sign hanging above the door. $$. Biela ul. 5. % 371-822. < 10:00-22:00 M-Su.

U Senatora- The descent from street-level is surprisingly long and the light emitted from the room at the end of the stairwell is pink. Very, very pink. And sparkly. A mellow place to sip away the evening. The food is actually quite good. $$. Župné nám. < 10:00-23:00.
