Mečiar refuses to answer questions

Former Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar appeared before police yesterday to answer questions as to where he got the Sk41 million ($880,000) he paid in 1999 for construction work on his villa, but refused to explain, arguing a constitutional right “not to squeal on myself.”

Arriving at a regional Trnava police station six hours later than had been agreed, Mečiar taunted reporters who asked him how someone earning the wages of a Slovak politician could save so much money. “If you don’t know, you’ll be journalists until you die,” he said.
