HZDS exodus continues

The entire 14-member district branch of the HZDS opposition party in western Slovakia’s Nové Mesto nad Váhom has defected to the rival HZD as a hemorrhage of members from the ostracised HZDS continues.

While it is not known how many members of Vladimír Mečiar’s HZDS have left to join the HZD, founded three weeks ago by former Mečiar ally Ivan Gašparovič, political analysts are beginning to revise earlier predictions that the HZD has no chance of securing the five per cent support in September elections needed to enter parliament.
