C/A deficit on par with 2001

THE CURRENT account deficit rose a massive Sk15.3 billion in May to hit Sk36.3 billion for the first five months of 2002, putting Slovakia on track to beat the record Sk84.8 billion deficit set last year.

The deficit, which was over 8 per cent of GDP last year, has been cited by international economic observers as a major problem facing the government emerging from September elections.
