More professionals to guard borders

IN LINE with a project to increase the professionalism of Slovakia's border protection, the country will need to hire 365 officers by 2003.

As a European Union (EU) candidate Slovakia needs to comply with the Schengen Treaty requirements before the country's EU entry. It is still customary that conscripts serving in the army guard the borders.

Costs related to the hirings are estimated at Sk67 million ($1.48 million).
