Smer member busted for birds

POLICE are investigating a senior member of Robert Fico's non-parliamentary Smer party, Dušan Muňko, on allegations he is keeping 24 species of exotic birds at his home without the proper licenses.

The charges against Muňko were laid by the Slovak Environment Inspectorate. Although elections are less than a month away, police say the charges have no political undertones.

Muňko faces a fine or one to five years in prison if eventually convicted.
