Both unemployment and employment fell in the second quarter of 2002, with economists explaining the paradox by noting that the university student population was 10 per cent larger than in the second quarter of 2001.
Unemployment in the second quarter was down 60 basis points from 2Q01 to 18.6 per cent, while 486,000 people were without jobs, 4.6 per cent less than a year ago.
Meanwhile, the number of economically active people fell from 2Q01 to 2Q02 by 0.2 per cent to 2.114 million.
