Nuclear plant expects EU closure funding

THE CLOSURE of two aging reactors at the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear plant will require 194 million euro to defray the social costs, of which 177 million will come from the EU, according to a proposal by the plant.

Almost 1,200 people now work at the plant, and another 2,000 are employed in supplier firms. The EU money would help find new work for the employees, who are expected to leave the Trnava-area plant as it shuts down from 2006 to 2008 in accordance with a deal between the Dzurinda cabinet and the EU.
