International human traffic gang busted

POLICE FROM Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Germany broke up an international criminal gang involved in people smuggling, arresting 47 people including the ringleaders.

The gang is suspected of having smuggled thousands of illegal immigrants across the lightly guarded Slovak-Austrian and Hungarian-Austrian borders.

People trafficking has become a major concern for the European Union as it prepares for 10 new members in 2004.
