Budget tax income higher than expected

THE 2002 state budget's overall income from taxes was 4.8 per cent higher than predicted, with corporate taxes over 22 per cent above target, in what government officials called a vindication of the principle that lower tax rates would increase budget tax income.

Corporate taxes were cut to 25 per cent, effective last year, drawing claims that the budget would suffer.
