Kukan's candidacy received coolly

PRIME Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda's support of Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan for the presidency in scheduled 2004 elections drew criticism from his ruling coalition partners, who said they preferred a candidate who was not a member of the former communist regime.

Kukan was a member of the Communist Party during his service abroad at Czechoslovak diplomatic missions in the 1970s.
