US wants Slovak backing against Iraq

The United States requested that Slovakia consider taking part in a multinational coalition in a possible war against Iraq, although PM Mikuláš Dzurinda did not reveal further details of the request.

While western Europe is largely against a US-led attack on Saddam Hussein's Iraq, many former communist states in central and eastern Europe support America.

Dzurinda said he would discuss the request with his coalition partners and the political opposition before responding.
