District state offices to be abolished

THE RULING coalition agreed that district state offices would be abolished as of January 1, 2004, and their powers transferred to locally elected governments.

The step is expected to bring to an end to the decentralisation of state power in Slovakia, a process connected to Slovakia's EU accession that was launched in 2001.
