Tax on pensioners proposed

THE FINANCE Ministry wants to tax pensioners, as is already done in most other European countries including the Czech Republic.

The general director of the tax and duties section of the Finance Ministry said: "I don't see any reason why [large sums of money held by pensioners] should not be taxed."

One alternative that has been put forward is that pensioners who continue to work will lose their right to the tax-free portion of their income.
