Italy wants to go on using Tokay name

ITALY is requesting the continued use of the Tokay trademark for some of its wines after March 2007, the current deadline set for using this trademark by Italian and French wine producers.

This request, made by the Italian delegation to the Council of the EU, was published as an attachment to the official decision on the entry of 10 new countries, including Slovakia, passed by the council on April 14.

In 2006 the European Commission is expected to propose a solution to the controversy surrounding the use of the Tokay trademark, which both Slovakia and Hungary claim a right to. The Tokay wine region is divided between the two countries.
