Fico re-elected as leader of Smer

ROBERT Fico remains the Smer party chairman after the party congress held in Hlohovec (west Slovakia) on Saturday re-elected him for another four-year term. The party founder Fico, 38, was the only candidate and was supported by 206 delegates. Two ballots were invalid.

Before he was re-elected chairman, Fico emphasised in an address that pragmatism and common sense must remain the characteristic feature of the party. He said that Smer must never slip into extremist ideology like the Communists (KSS) or Christian Democrats (KDH).
