Unemployment falls to 1998 levels

APRIL's unemployment fell to 15.44 percent the Labour Ministry reported, the lowest figure since the end of 1998.

Martin Barto, an analyst from Slovenská sporiteľňa bank, said: "Unemployment dropped mainly thanks to new jobs with foreign investors. Slovak businesses are still restructuring and laying off workers, but foreign investors are taking on more people than [Slovak businesses] are making redundant."

Other analysts point out that changes in unemployment registration earlier in the year have kept the figures down, and say numbers can be expected to rise in the future. Today's unemployment is on a similar level to that of Spain.
