CHAIRMAN of the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), Vladimír Mečiar, will be the only candidate when the party holds an election for his position at its upcoming convention, according to HZDS spokesman Igor Žvach.
The decision follows a series of regional and district conferences of the former ruling party. The party convention is slated to take place on June 14, in Púchov, near Trenčín.
Mečiar has led HZDS since it was founded in 1991, and served as prime minister on three occasions. He has been one of Slovakia's most popular politicians throughout its history.
