ANO refuses to withdraw abortion amendment

The New Citizen's Alliance (ANO) will not withdraw its proposed amendment to the abortion act from parliament, despite splits in the coalition over the issue.

ANO leader Pavol Rusko has said he will only scrap the amendment if coalition partners sign documents promising to support current Health Ministry guidelines, which include the right to abortions up to the 24th week in cases of genetic disorders.

"Our standpoint is clear and unchanged," said Rusko.

The Christian Democrats (KDH) are challenging the existing law in the Constitutional Court. MPs are due to vote on the amendment 10 days before the Constitutional Court ruling is due.
