Doctors sentenced for bribery

THE FORMER head of the Health Ministry's expert section, Rudolf Štefanovič, and a doctor from Banská Bystrica, Dušan Šťastný, were sentenced to one year each in jail for accepting a bribe of Sk2 million (€48,800).

A Banská Bystrica court also ruled the two men must pay Sk100,000 (€2,400) in fines.

The corruption affair goes back to 2001 when the Health Ministry decided to approve a bid by a firm from Bardejov, eastern Slovakia, to take over the operation of the hospital.

Both men pleaded not guilty and said they would appeal the verdict.
