Top pick: Summer festivals get rolling

WHILE fans of rock music are waiting for the largest Slovak rock festival, Pohoda, to start in mid July, they can whet their musical appetites by attending the earlier Rock Pop Corgoň Festival, Veľkopopovický Kozel Klikkfest, and Omega Rock Fest music events taking place in late June and early July.
Although these three festivals focus on rock music, other genres will be presented too. And, in addition to the music, all the festivals will also offer other attractions and activities. The Rock Pop Corgoň Festival and Klikkfest will host camping and swimming in a lake, and the Omega Rock Fest will have merry-go-rounds and games for children.
The Rock Pop Corgoň Festival will present 41 bands from Slovakia and five other countries. The recreational area of Kurinec (located only three kilometres from the southern Slovak city of Rimavská Sobota) will host this festival from July 3 to July 5.

The Rock Pop Corgoň Festival will present 41 bands from Slovakia and five other countries. The recreational area of Kurinec (located only three kilometres from the southern Slovak city of Rimavská Sobota) will host this festival from July 3 to July 5.

The highlight of the event will be the heavy metal band Motörhead, which will be performing in Slovakia for the first time.

"[The band members] consider themselves to be the loudest band in the world," said Dušan Hladký, one of the festival's organisers.

Last year there were over 10,000 visitors to the festival, and according to the organisers the same amount of people are expected to show up this year.

The majority of the festival's music will be rock, but there will also be some other bands performing. "Since it is a rock pop festival, singers like [Slovak pop star] Misha will be singing, too," says Hladký.

On the last day, popular Slovak rock bands Gladiator, Tublatanka, and Dereš will perform, and the whole festival will end with a concert by the Latvian band BrainStorm in the evening.

The cost of tickets bought in advance - before July 2 - is Sk490. During the festival they will cost Sk590. The camping area is nearby and will be open on Thursday from 15:00 until Sunday evening. For more information visit www.rockpopcorgon.sk or call 02/5296-3701.

Another summer festival, but one with less rock music is Veľkopopovický Kozel Klikkfest, which will take place in the western Slovak town of Nové Zámky on Sihoť island from July 10 to July 12. The festival, which is in its 10th year, will present pop bands from eight countries. The main star of the international Klikkfest festival will be the Icelandic band Mezzoforte. The Hungarian band M.É.Z. will play traditional Irish and Scottish music.

In addition, Klikkfest will hold a blood drive during the festival. For more information about the festival and tickets visit www.klikkfest.sk or call 02/5296-3701.

Another festival will be the two-day Omega Rock Fest taking place at Senica airport from June 27 to June 28.

The event will have typical rock bands performing, such as the Czech band Alkehol, Slovak Tublatanka, Metalinda, and Hex. Besides the bands mentioned above there will be punk rock music at the festival with Slovak bands Slobodná Európa, Zóna A, and the Czech band Visací Zámek.

One of the most significant attractions during the Omega Rock Fest will be Zdeno Chobot, who will try to break a Guinness Record by pulling two 16-ton trailers while pushing another one at the same time.
